Orton- Gillingham This course will focus on using the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach in a small group setting. OG is an instructional approach using an intensive, multisensory, sequential phonics-based system that teaches the basics of reading and spelling. This method teaches to a student’s strengths while also seeking to improve weaknesses. Anyone can benefit from reading practice, especially during the summer months! The OG approach will teach children the skills needed to help with reading all year long.
Coding Coding is a fundamental skill alongside math and reading, but too few kids have the opportunity to learn to program because it is rarely taught in school. This class will create a fun and engaging platform where children not only learn to program, but also have opportunities to be creative using code.
Cooking This class will specialize in healthy, fun, hands-on cooking lessons that explore international cuisine with children. We’re less concerned about drilling in “what’s good for us” and more on finding out that cooking is fun. Together we develop basic kitchen skills such as kitchen safety, knife technique, measuring, an appreciation of kitchen tools and the various techniques each recipe requires. In handing the students the ingredients, giving them agency over the production of the meal and allowing them to smell, taste, measure and manipulate each part of the cooking process, we hope to open up a new perspective on food and help students begin a lifetime of cooking nourishing food. At the end of every lesson we have the opportunity to taste the dish we’ve made together.
Anthropology This class will celebrate under represented communities through arts based sessions that feature music, specialized books and artifacts. Teachers will implement all activities promoting tolerance, empathy and social emotional learning.
Book Club Students will read a series of chapter books, based on their common interests and discuss the characters and events. We will finish the series with a project that students can bring home.
Creative Writing During this class, students will be able to choose a genre of writing and be as creative as they'd like. While students will be able to use their creativity, we will also have an emphasis on standard writing rules and grammar. The series will end with a published piece of work that students can bring home.
Advertising Concepts This class will teach students about advertising techniques. Students will be able to create their own ads for products and complete a final project to take home.
Yoga This class will provide students with tools that will help them navigate physical, mental and emotional barriers to learning, including improving focus and concentrations skills. The class will provide an environment of support and encouragement, where children can feel safe and respected, and find enjoyment and success in a non-competitive physical activity.
Meditation This class will help teens deal with anxiety, school stress, self esteem & peer pressure issues, time management, assertiveness and confidence building. Classes are one hour long and it is recommend that friends sign up together to take better advantage of the practice. The world of the teenager is quite different than that of an adult or a child. Teens seem to be more comfortable when accompany by a peer. This class is ideal to share with your close friends as together you discover the infinite possibilities that lie within you.Teens in past classes had expressed great enthusiasm and were amazed by the discoveries made and the “Aha moments” they experienced during the class.
